Tenant sued landlord for negligence after she fell on outdoor steps leading to her basement apartment. The trial court ruled for tenant. Landlord appealed and lost. Tenant showed that landlord negligently maintained the steps. She testified that she couldn't see the steps because the entryway into the basement apartment was dark. Tenant's expert witness also testified that the steps lacked adequate lighting and a handrail, making them unsafe.
