Rent-Stabilized Tenant Overcharged Subtenant

Subtenant complained that she was overcharged by rent-stabilized tenant. The DRA ruled for subtenant. Tenant appealed and lost. Tenant claimed that she didn't know there was an overcharge. She also said she lost all her furnishings when subtenant locked her out of the apartment. Tenant's ignorance of the law is no defense to rent overcharge. As to lost furnishings, tenant can start a court proceeding if she has a claim against subtenant.
