Illegally Converted Spaces Not Covered
LVT Number: 18998
Landlord sued to evict loft tenant. Tenant had a commercial lease that expired in 2002. Tenant had paid no rent since then. Tenant lived in the loft and claimed he was rent stabilized. The court ruled against tenant. The loft was illegally converted to residential space and wasn't covered by the Loft Law. Tenant wasn't entitled to rent-stabilization coverage, even if his residential use of the space could be legalized.
